“Crossroads 2015: Human Cities_ Challenging the city scale” workshop 16 - 17 March 2015 / news from Belgrade Design WeekHuman Cities explores how citizens are (re)appropriating the contemporary and ever - changing city by experimenting in the urban space.

In this workshop, the Cité du design merges the itineraries of partners from the European program “Human Cities Challenging the City Scale”, designers from UNESCO Creative Cities of Design and from European Living Labs. Belgrade Design Week also share news about ‘Reconstructing cities through human-driven scenarios and temporary performances in public space’

The Cité du design proposes to cross the itineraries of the 12 partners from the European program “Human Cities Challenging the City Scale”, designers from UNESCO Creative Cities of Design and from European Living Labs. With Human Cities, we want to explore how citizens are (re)appropriating the contemporary and ever - changing city by experimenting in the urban space. “Crossroads 2015” is a creative workshop about the re-use of vacant shops and commercial spaces in the Saint-Etienne Jacquard district. It will gather local stakeholders, designers and Cité du design international networks. It will be animated by the association Carton Plein, which will be set up in a “Temporary Office for Urban Activation” (in French “Bureau éphémère d’activation urbaine” a.k.a “BEAU” ) during the Biennial. We think that the keys to success for cities are human capital, imagination and design!

Crossroads 2015 is the first workshop of the European project Human Cities, for which Cité du design is the leader for four years (EU programme Creative Europe /Culture). The Human Cities project is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme/ Culture of The European Union.

As a project partner, Belgrade Design Week will be involved in the research on design and urban space as well as the project overall coordination and communication. During four year BDW will lead an experimentation laboratory in Belgrade, create an interaction & exchange workshop, and host one of the venues of the travelling exhibition during Belgrade Design Week 2017 that will focus on the theme of “Reconstructing cities through human-driven scenarios and temporary performances in public space”.

Today cities have to manage increasing challenges such as a growing cultural diversity, the adaptation to an ageing population, the reduction of energy consumption, social exclusion, segregation and social polarization. Traditionally, new developments of cities have been planned based on the formula: first buildings, then spaces, and then (perhaps) life. In present-day planning, this formula must be turned about, and the questions should be: what kind of life do we want here, what kind of spaces will be needed for this life, and finally, how can the buildings in this area be placed and formed to support these spaces and the life in this area? This workshop will explore the ways that creative practices—improvised movement, choreographed dance, and digital video—produce new knowledge about the sociability of public space.
